The room was dark and completely quiet. Moss Point School District Nurse Evelynn Stephens was caught by surprise when she opened the door to the district’s board room and found her coworkers yelling “surprise” and clapping to congratulate her on being named Mississippi’s School Nurse of the Year.
“What a surprise,” said Stephens. “I honestly didn’t expect this.” Stephens received the award at the Mississippi School Nurse Association’s Annual Convention recently held in Tunica, Mississippi. The school district celebrated Stephens’ success with a surprise reception.

Orange Lake Elementary Principal Icy Tolbert was one of thirty honorees recently recognized at Moss Point School District’s Annual Recognition Reception. Tolbert was named Administrator of the Year.
“I would like to thank, first of all, God because this would not be possible without Him,” she said as she accepted her award. “I want to also thank my family and my staff.” |

The students were the teachers at Moss Point School District’s LIFT (Leaders and Intelligent Futuristic Thinkers) end-of-the-year event. LIFT is a program that gives gifted students the opportunity to explore and expand beyond the traditional classroom setting. There are nearly 200 students enrolled in the program.
“We stimulate their cognitive skills,” said Sonja Boone, one of the district’s LIFT teachers. “We work on thinking skills, communication skills, leadership development, social and emotional development, performing arts, and career paths.”

Fun, food, fellowship, and a wealth of information are on the menu for Moss Point School District’s 6th Annual Back to School Rally. The event is set for Friday, August 14, 2009, at 5:30 p.m. at Dantzler Memorial Stadium.
Moss Point School District officials say last year’s rally was the biggest and best ever with more than 1500 people in attendance. The rally’s format was expanded last year to include the traditional Meet the Team to introduce high school athletic teams.

The Moss Point School District recently held its 3rd Annual Academic Awards Banquet. Students who received straight A’s throughout the school year (three nine weeks total) were recognized with special awards. Also, students with perfect attendance for the school year and students who performed well on state tests were honored for their success. Staples and Applied Business Concepts supplied door prizes such as a 20” flat screen television and digital camera.
Members of the Superintendent Student Advisory Council initiated organizing this event in 2006, and it has become a favorite of students and their parents. It has grown over the years with more than 600 students and their families in attendance. Here is a list of this year’s honorees:

Moss Point School District board members voted on Tuesday, June 9, 2009, to restructure its six elementary schools in the fall of 2010 instead of implementing the plan in the fall of 2009. Members say waiting a year will allow staff, students, and their families more time to prepare for the change.
“The board agrees that the restructuring should take place,” said Board President Charles Wesley. “It was just a matter of when it should happen.”

Less than perfect weather could not stop the Moss Point High School Class of 2009 from enjoying their day to shine brightly. Though the festivities were moved from Dantzler Stadium, where Commencement is always held, to the Arthur B. Hayes Gymnasium, the spirit and excitement of graduation was ever-present as families sat side-by-side to cheer the graduates on as they collected their diplomas and walked into a diverse, always-changing world. |

What do you get when you put Moss Point High School’s top ten graduates and the superintendent in a Hummer limo? A new Moss Point tradition! For the second year, Superintendent Kim Staley treated the top ten graduates to lunch at Barnhill’s Restaurant. Students say the best part of the treat was being picked up from graduation practice and escorted to lunch in a Hummer limo which was provided by Moss Point High’s PTO.
